Grant SommerfeldMBA, CMC, CFM, CEFP, FRICS​Grant Sommerfeld is a distinguished Facilities Management (FM) executive known for his entrepreneurial approach and over 17 years of leadership expertise in diverse sectors, including healthcare, government, and higher education. He has demonstrated his adept management skills by leading teams of up to 750 members and managing budgets of up to $41.5 million. His post-secondary experience includes nine years as the Associate Vice-President of Facilities Management for Mount Royal University in Calgary. Here he was responsible for a 2M square foot campus situated on a 118 acres parcel of land. He was recruited to revitalize and modernize FM operations. During his tenure, he demonstrated his resilience and adaptability by leading FM through numerous changes in senior leadership and strategic direction, significant budget reductions, and the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Grant also worked with the City of Calgary where he led facilities management operations for the Corporate Buildings and Property division. He showcased his problem-solving skills and ability to handle crises by taking charge of the stabilization and restoration of the Calgary City Hall complex following the devastating flood in 2013. Repair costs of the complex exceeded $33M. His healthcare experience includes nearly seven years as the Chief Facilities Management Officer for the Saskatoon Health Region, where he held executive responsibility for the fourth largest department in a 12,000-employee organization operating 10 hospitals and 29 long-term care facilities. Here, he led a regional team responsible for acute and long-term care operational support services, including facility maintenance and operations, housekeeping, security services, renovations and new construction, utility management, grounds and snow removal, space planning, and an 8,500-stall parking operation. Armed with an MBA from the University of Saskatchewan, he holds three professional certifications in facilities management and one in management consulting. Grant has honed his executive leadership and strategy skills at prestigious institutions, including Cornell, the London School of Economics, INSEAD, and HEC Paris. In August 2023, he was made a Fellow by the UK-based Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, the world’s largest and oldest credentialing body for property management professionals. |
